?
International Mother Language Day has a profound origin. It was established by UNESCO in 1999 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity, but its roots trace back to a 1952 protest in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan).
Students and activists demonstrated in Dhaka to demand that Bangla, their mother tongue, be recognized as an official language. Tragically, several protesters lost their lives in the conflict. Their sacrifice planted a seed that grew into a global observance, transforming a story of loss into a worldwide movement for preservation and respect.
This day now honors all languages, specially those at risk of fading away and preserving the right of every person to speak and learn in their mother tongue. It reminds us that language is not just a tool for communication but a vessel for identity and heritage.
By celebrating it, we commit to a world where no voice is silenced and every language is valued as a key piece of our shared human story. Thank you for reading and wish you a happy International Mother Language Day 2026.
